FELCONE, JOSEPH J. New Jersey Broadsides Before 1900:A Descriptive Catalogue of the Joseph J. Felcone Collection. Princeton: Joseph J. Felcone Inc., 2023. 8 1/2 x 11 in. 140 p. Cloth.
Joseph Felcone has been collecting printed New Jerseyana assiduously for more than fifty years—books, pamphlets, and broadsides. Unlike books and pamphlets, broadsides are ephemeral. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries they offered timely information of local and regional interest, such as official announcements, political puffs, merchants’ advertisements, or news of upcoming entertainments. They were posted in public places, sent with newspapers, hawked by chapmen, and distributed by hand. And once they had served their purpose, they are taken down or discarded. Rarely were they saved. New Jersey Broadsides records nearly seven hundred broadsides from 1778 through 1899. Each entry contains extensive text from the broadside followed by descriptive notes. The exhaustive index to the work includes every name, place, and subject in every entry, including printers’ imprints. In addition, as an aid to the local and county historian, each broadside is assigned one or more county entries in the index
