CICERO, MARCUS TULLIUS. Rhetoricorum seu De inventione rhetorica ... ex recensione Petri Burmanni secundi cum notis variorum.... Eiusdem De optimo genere oratorum nunc primum notis variorum illustratus. Naples: Joseph Maria Porcelli, 1777. [iii]-x, 414 p. Contemporary vellum. Wanting binder's blanks and possibly a half title or conjugate initial blank. Moderate foxing, else a very good copy. In these two works, on rhetorical invention and on the best kinds of orators, Cicero the expert gives advice to the writer and speech-maker. Both are variorum editions, the former edited by Burmann, whose output earned him the title "beast of burden" of classical scholarship. The volume is part of a series of the works of Cicero (never completed) published by Porcelli, "a very valuable impression," according to Dibdin. Dibdin I, pp. 406-407; Schweiger II, p. 109.
